Patrick Mavros Exhibitions
The Directors of The PlettAid Foundation / Hospice Plett and Robin Pelham-Reid of Cornerway House are delighted to welcome both Patrick Mavros and his Collection of Silver Sculptures and Jewellery to Plettenberg Bay.
A Private View will be hosted by Robin Pelham-Reid at Cornerway House on Thursday the 26th March followed by a Public View at The Plettenberg Hotel on Friday the 27th March from 10.00am to 5.30pm, entrance free. We have to thank Robin for these fund-raising exhibitions as it was his idea to bring Patrick Mavros to Plettenberg Bay, hosting the team at Cornerway House and benefitting the PlettAid Foundation / Hospice Plett at the same time.
Patrick Mavros, a fourth generation Zimbabwean, was born and brought up in Matabeleland where he developed a deep love and affinity for wildlife, sketching and mentally recording all the beauty that he saw in his surroundings. He started his career as a baker, then became a soldier and when he married, he carved a pair of earrings in the form of roses, for his new bride. He was soon inundated with requests from friends for similar pieces of jewellery and thus the Patrick Mavos business was born.
He and his wife Catja live on an estate near Harare and all the pieces are created in his workshop in Zimbabwe. Their four sons are now involved in the family business. Alexander, based in London, is head of retail and marketing; Forbes, based in Mauritius, directs and creates the jewellery collections, bringing a new dimension to the business, working with Patrick junior and Ben who head the workshop in Zimbabwe. They all collaborate very closely. Ideas for pieces influenced by African animals, materials and culture are drawn and discussed and then carved by hand.
All the pieces are cast in sterling silver using the lost wax method. The mark is registered at the Assay Office in the Goldsmith Hall in London.
The range of the collection is considerable comprising over 200 pieces from tiny elephant stud-earrings to leopard and lion table lamps. Patrick Mavros recently celebrated his 10th Anniversary in London launching the Sea Urchin Collection of exquisite, delicate objects and jewellery. The brand is now very well known in Europe. It received worldwide acclaim following the publication of various articles stating that friends of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were purchasing the Mavros collection of miniature animals as christening presents for Prince George thus adding to the royal couple’s own collection of objects and jewellery.
We thank Robin Pelham-Reid and Patrick Mavros for their sponsorship and support of the PlettAid Foundation / Hospice Plett and we look forward to welcoming you all to the Plettenberg Hotel and introducing you to both Patrick and his art. His is a story teller and bon vivant and having collaborated with him on exhibitions in London and the Isle of Man, it will be an experience not to be missed.
Patrick Mavros has very generously donated four pieces of Mavros jewellery as ticket prizes which will be drawn at 5.30pm by Robin Pelham-Reid on the Friday afternoon.
The tickets cost R100 each and can be obtained during the private and public views or by email to aconyngham@telkomsa.net
