The town is named after the fifty million year-old Bretagne Dome that forms part of the second largest granite outcrop in the Southern Hemisphere. On a damp day in 1657 the dome was shimmering like a pearl in the sun’s reflection and Bailiff Abraham Gabemma, upon seeing this spectacular sight, named the region Peerlbergh (“Pearl Mountain”).

Situated roughly 60km’s (or a 45 minutes drive) from Cape  Town on the N1, Paarl is the 3rd oldest European settlement in South Africa and the largest town in the beautiful and historic Cape  Winelands. History

Noteworthy local businesses are coffee shops, florists and a variety of superb art galleries. Several local decor stores boast one-of-a-kind antiques unique to the region and established home industries produce delicious home-made sweet and savoury treats.

The newly built Paarl Mall affords both visitors and residents the opportunity to shop at major retail stores, all under one roof with ample parking available.

The Paarl region currently provides a range of activities and sightseeing opportunities for both local and international visitors, including world famous wine farms (many boasting top class restaurants and beautiful, sweeping vistas), hiking routs up Paarl Mountain, rock-climbing on the granite outcrops, as well as mountain biking.
