Mandela Day in Paarl
What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead – Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.
It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”.
It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.
Mandela Day in Paarl
Laborie and Magda’s Soup Kitchen
Laborie will provide soup and bread to more than 80 people on Monday, the 18th of July and they have requested KWV staff to donate disposable nappies and kids socks to hand over on the day as well.
They will all be meeting at the local Karate Club hall (“Groendakkies”) in Paarl East where soup will be served and the donations handed over. They will involve some of the Laborie and KWV staff in the events and take some photos for afterwards.
Magda provides soup to the poverty stricken community of Paarl East but also has a project that involves the washing/bathing of babies from the surrounding informal settlements. The mothers bring the babies to the Hall to be bathed in warm water and treated for sickness and sores, Magda also keeps an eye on them so make sure the children are not neglected and taken care of. She involves the local police and social workers to assist where needed.
The Grande Roche Hotel, Little Fighters and Fisantekraal Animal Welfare
The Grande Roche hotel will also be joining in on this initiative with their Charity Concert on Saturday night. Join them for a fun filled evening.
The show is the Hotel’s fund raising contribution towards Mandela Day and all proceeds will go to two charities namely Little Fighters Cancer Trust and Fisantekraal Animal Welfare.
They are very excited to have the well-known Christo & Cobus as well as the very popular local artist, Desmond Wells providing the entertainment for the evening.
The concert will be hosted at the Amphitheatre in a huge marquee tent with heaters to ensure the cold is kept outside. Book your Tickets today for this wonderful cause.
