Caving by Candlelight
Have you have ever fancied exploring an underground world and uncovering the magnificent secrets buried far beneath us? If you have, then Caving by Candlelight is definitely for you.
Unlike traditional caving where powerful headlights and torches allow you to see for hundreds of metres ahead of you, the Caving by Candlelight experience adds to the mystery of the caves by only revealing a glimpse at a time. Beautiful manganese crystals, stalactites and aptly named cauliflower formations appear from nowhere, the candlelight allowing each to have its own moment to shine before returning into the darkness once more.
The tour takes place near Sabie’s famed Lone Creek waterfall and guides you through caves formed 200million years ago. The main section of the tour has ample headroom for people to walk easily through the caves without bending, making it accessible to anyone who can walk the 1km loop. For the more adventurous, four crawl trails provide an alternative route to the main path. A comfortable fit for most people under 110kg, these are not for the faint hearted as you will find yourself wet, muddy and on your hands and knees trying not to let the candle wax drip on you! But don’t worry, overalls and hardhats are provided and the sense of satisfaction afterwards is definitely worth it.
The tour starts at 18:45 and the experience lasts anything from an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the speed of the group and whether you attempt the crawls. At only R280 per person it really is an adventure that the whole family will enjoy.
