Jason Powell’s interest in food was sparked by a yachting course, during which he ended up doing most of the cooking out at sea. “I never went on a boat again after that,” he says.
With his feet now firmly planted, he recently opened a new restaurant, The Food Fundi in Nelspruit’s Absa Square. Its bright and breezy interior is matched by the menu, a combination of fresh and unusual dishes.
Lunch possibilities include a biltong, cheese and jalapeno toasted sandwich, lamb burgers with lemon and beetroot salsa, and a smoked salmon wrap served with chives and feta. There is an all-day breakfast menu and healthy smoothies with names like Tropical Hula Kula and Bionic Tonic.
“We try to offer healthy options,” says Jason. “We source local products and make just about everything else ourselves.” Jars of pineapple chili chutney and onion marmalade line the shelves, as well as macadamia and olive oils, coffees and deli products.
Jason’s sister, Robin Dovey, is the pastry chef responsible for a daily array of fresh pies, cakes, muffins and other treats, including delicious chocolate brownies. Her health seed loaf has converted quite a few white bread eaters, he says.
The Food Fundi serves a mean cup of coffee and is a free wi-fi zone. Open from 7am to 5pm on Monday to Friday, and from 9am to 2pm on Saturday, it’s a great spot to hunker down with a laptop. – Ciska Kay
