Pumas come close to a Currie Cup upset at Newlands
Cape Town – The Pumas, for nearly an hour, looked to score a surprise Currie Cup victory over Western Province at Newlands on Saturday but a yellow card and penalty try eventually cost them dearly and saw the WP home 34-19.
The Pumas were leading 12-10 at half-time and 19-10 soon afterwards but a yellow card shown to hooker Frankie Herne changed the momentum of the game and Province scored.
After three tries, by Stephan Greeff, Devon Williams and Trompie Pretorius it seemed that the Pumas would emulate their famous and only victory over Province at Newlands in 1999.
The penalty try that coincided the yellow card helped Province to a 29-19 lead and took the game away from the visitors.
