Madam & Eve | South African Council for Business Women
The madams dressed like the eves in overalls and feather dusters and the eves dressed like the madams looking their best but in all the name of good fun. The annual Madam and Eve event hosted by the South African Council for Business Women (SACBW) ensured a lot of fun and laughter on Saturday, 9 February.
“The idea of the event is to put each party in one another’s shoes and get together for some fun,” said member of the management team, Melody Tomlinson.
On the morning’s programme was a monologue by actress, Annette Engelbrecht, a talk on headware by Betty Khosi and a koeksister baking demonstration by the Women Agricultural Union’s Loerie branch.
“Why must women wear headwear? It’s to show respect, especially to the inlaws,” Betty Khosi from Hair of Africa humoured the crowd.
“In my culture it is a sign of disrespect if a woman shows her hair especially since it may be a sign to other men besides her husband to approach her. With regard to the inlaws, they must not see how beautiful you are because they may decide to take you away,” Khosi said.
Other uses for headwear includes covering ones hair during cooking and as a fashion statement. Khosi demonstrated to the room how to properly wrap a head piece around ones head.
The monologue by Anette Engelbrecht kept the audience compelled. The role play was about a woman writing letters to the authorities regarding various complaints until the day her complaint backfired.
Next Dolly Mbuyane from Nozihle Cleaning Services taught the audience a few nifty tricks on how to clean properly.
The ladies got a taste of the sweet life by testing freshly made koeksisters specially prepared by the Women Agricultural Union’s Loerie branch at the venue. Sunette Barnard and Maaida Miljo both from the famous Huletts Koeksister Champion competition, showed the madams and eves how to make traditional koeksisters.
“We really enjoyed being spoilt and having to see our madams dress in our overalls, I will never forget this day!” said Thembi Mkhabela.
The next SACBW event will take place in March and will be a day for the entrepreneurs.
