As a facility, they have always been at the forefront of their industry, but the addition of these new services will see them grow from strength to strength:
Lowmed High Performance Centre – Creating Winners
As the province’s only accredited high performance centre, their focus will be to identify new talent and nurture these athletes to achieve at the top level of their sport. They are also focusing on keeping current performance athletes in the province by providing specialised services not previously available in the province.
The high performance centre is equipped with state of the art equipment and technology to help them assess athletes scientifically and manage the development and recovery processes for professional athletes.
Lowmed Concussion Centre – Cogstate Testing
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that could affect brain function and lead to disability or death.
Lowmed understand the seriousness of this and for this reason they have opened the Lowmed Concussion Centre. Through careful Cogstate Testing they can compare athletes to baseline tests done before traumatic head injuries. These results can then be used to plan a return to play program.
Emergency Medical Services
Lowmed have for years already been providing EMS services at most of the schools in the area but they have always used other service providers for the ambulance services. But they now have two ambulance of their own, staffed with professional experienced staff.
Lowmed are also investing in the community as they currently have three students studying to become ambulance assistants on bursaries they provided.
The evening ended with a very inspirational talk by Jannie Putter, the current Lions Rugby mental coach. He launched his new book, The Sport Coach – The psychology behind coaching, these are some of the highlights of his talk:
- A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.
- With the Lions, they don’t play to win. They play to be the best they can be. Focusing on winning is very difficult, but being the best you can be is much more achievable in your mind.
- The word you use effects your mental state. If someone asks you a question, answering “I think so” versus “yes” has a very different effect on how you see yourself.
- Teaching your child to deal with circumstances is essential as circumstances happen to everyone. When you find a dream -go for it!
