Curro pupils humbled after visiting less privileged school
Four Curro Nelspruit Grade 10 learners left a local primary school with lumps in their throat.
The girls accompanied Head of Academics Thomas Barry to Boschrand Primary School on Wednesday, October 28. Situated on the outskirts of Nelspruit and White River in an informal settlement that has recently been declared a township, Boschrand has over 700 pupils who attend school in old prefabricated classrooms.
The school does not have enough furniture or other resources and has no sports fields but the learners are bright eyed and the school grounds clean.
Following Curro’s recent Literacy Day essay competition, a book drive was held among the high school learners and the purpose of the visit to Boschrand was to hand over boxes of books that had been collected, and which will now supplement Boschrand’s fledgling library. At present, a few shelves of books constitute the library but Principal FP Moreku says a donation of shelving is imminent, so soon the newly donated books will be proudly displayed next to the existing ones.
The girls – Thato Radebe, Caria Spider, Bianka Liversage and Nicola Botha – said they realise how blessed they are after visiting Boschrand. They gave special thanks for their small class sizes after seeing Boschrand’s Grade 7 class of 54 learners. “We are so privileged,” they echoed.
Accompanying the Curro delegation were two ladies from the Mpumalanga Education Department – Chief Education Specialist Fikile Jila and Deputy Chief Education Specialist Thandiwe Thwala.
Curro hopes to hold an even bigger book drive in 2016.
