Mahoi ahoy!

Business partners Johnny Robinson and Nic Hulley-Miller make a point of the personal at Mahoi’s restaurant, recently opened at Bagdad near White River.
Nic is pleasantly front of house in the small, intimate setting. Chef Johnny keeps popping out of the kitchen to chat to customers.
“Our staff members know exactly what goes into each dish. It’s not standard service,” says Nic.
The menu is small and seasonal. It focuses on “fresh, tasty, good food”, says Johnny, a graduate from Zevenwacht Chef School in Stellenbosch.
“We want to keep our menus uncomplicated to capitalise on whatever ingredients are available on the day. We’ll do quite a bit of fish and seafood, but also lamb and meat dishes.”
A covered outside deck built around a fever tree is perfect for meeting friends for a light lunch. At night, clever lighting bounces off a corrugated iron ceiling to create a futuristic glow.
It is a venue of modern contrasts: chrome bar stools combined with wooden flooring, crisp white linen offset by black napkins, natural elements with funky lighting. It is upmarket, funky and fun – just right for White River.
