JANE GOODALL TO ILLUMINATE THE LOWVELD WITH VISIT

The Lowveld region eagerly anticipates the visit of Dr. Jane Goodall, a distinguished ethologist and global conservation icon, scheduled this month. As honored hosts during this significant occasion, we are thrilled to facilitate various events and engagements that will underscore Dr. Goodall’s unparalleled contributions to biodiversity and conservation on a global scale. The primary focus of her visit will be a keynote address, during which she will shed light on the critical work undertaken by the Greater Riverside Biodiversity Initiative (GRBI), a visionary project that aims to protect and preserve the region’s rich natural heritage in collaboration and partnership with JGI Roots & Shoots.

The Greater Riverside Biodiversity Initiative (GRBI) is a groundbreaking initiative, designed to create a sustainable environment that both residents and visitors can enjoy for generations to come. With a strategic emphasis on biodiversity, conservation, and ecological awareness, this project promises to make Riverside a shining example of environmental stewardship. Dr. Goodall’s visit is set to be a catalyst, inspiring communities, and stakeholders to actively engage in the protection of our natural resources.

The collaboration between the Greater Riverside Biodiversity Initiative (GRBI) and JGI Roots & Shoots is rooted in a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and youth empowerment. Recognizing the intrinsic connection between conservation efforts and the mobilization of the younger generation, GRBI and JGI Roots & Shoots have forged a dynamic partnership. Their collaborative synergy is evident in the concerted efforts to create a harmonious balance between safeguarding the region’s rich natural heritage, as undertaken by GRBI, and empowering youth through compassionate decision-making and positive actions, as championed by JGI Roots & Shoots. This partnership exemplifies a holistic approach to environmental sustainability, where the wisdom of experienced conservation initiatives harmonizes with the vigor and innovation of youth-led projects. Together, GRBI and JGI Roots & Shoots are actively contributing to a future where biodiversity preservation and youth empowerment stand hand in hand, fostering a legacy of positive change for the Lowveld region and beyond.

As a testament to the collaborative efforts in biodiversity conservation, Dr. Jane Goodall will also be visiting the University of Mpumalanga during her stay in the Lowveld. The university is a proud partner of the Greater Riverside Biodiversity Initiative (GRBI). Dr. Goodall’s visit to the University of Mpumalanga highlights the significance of academia in fostering a deeper understanding of conservation and nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards.

In addition, as part of her itinerary, Dr. Goodall will engage in an informal and insightful session with the SANParks Honorary Rangers (SHR). In this gathering, she will address the dedicated Honorary Rangers and SAN Park Officials, sharing her profound insights on their shared passion for conservation. Dr. Goodall will emphasize the paramount importance of conservation efforts and its relevance in today’s society, inspiring the SHR members with her wisdom and reinforcing the collective commitment to preserving our natural heritage. This unique encounter between Dr. Goodall and the SANParks Honorary Rangers promises to be a highlight of her visit, showcasing the power of collaboration in safeguarding our planet’s precious ecosystems.

As we prepare to host Dr. Jane Goodall, we recognize the unique opportunity her visit presents to raise awareness about the GRBI’s mission and the broader significance of environmental conservation. Dr. Goodall’s keynote address to be presented at a gala evening on February 28th at the Emnotweni Arena, Nelspruit, will serve as a beacon, illuminating the path towards responsible environmental stewardship.

Professor Dan Parker, Chairperson of the GRBI Board expressed his excitement toward these events in saying “As Chairperson of the Greater Riverside Biodiversity Initiative (GRBI) Board, I am thrilled about the upcoming visit of Dr. Jane Goodall. I believe that the collaboration between GRBI and JGI Roots & Shoots represents a powerful alliance, uniting experienced conservation initiatives with the youthful energy of grassroots projects. Dr. Goodall’s visit is a testament to our shared commitment to biodiversity preservation and youth empowerment, setting the stage for an inspiring and impactful event that will resonate for years to come”.

Dr. Jane Goodall’s visit and the subsequent events that will be held is not merely a moment in time but a call to action. It is an opportunity for individuals, organizations, and government to recognize the importance of safeguarding our natural heritage. Dr. Goodall’s profound insights, gained from decades of dedicated work, will undoubtedly inspire attendees to consider their roles as stewards of the environment and catalysts for positive change.

Just when not much hope was given to Bafana Bafana to go further in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), surprisingly, they are now in the semifinals – courtesy of stupendous goalkeeping by captain Ronwen Williams.

Williams, the trusted last line of defense at Mamelodi Sundowns, brilliantly saved four penalties against Cape Verde in the quarterfinals on Saturday night.

Even the one that beat him was purely because of the pace, otherwise, he had gone in the right direction. Bafana Bafana won the nail-biting match 2-1.

They have come a long way to be where they are, having lost 2-0 to Mali, thumped Namibia 4-0, and a 0-0 draw with Tunisia. They then defeated Morocco 2-0 and then drew 0-0 with Cape Verde before the match was decided on penalties.

South Africans, genuine followers of football, are on cloud nine. There were wild celebrations in some parts of Soweto, and that includes the screeching of tires, which has become a fashionable way for Sowetans to celebrate any victory, be it political or on the sporting front.

Others have spoken on social media, but the superior voice that has come out in public is that of Sports, arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa.

“It was this day in 1996 when Bafana Bafana won the Afcon. You have carried the spirit today, boys. Well done, and all the best to the semifinals,” he said.

Regarding Williams’ performance, Kodwa said: “Such an inspiration, my captain.”

Williams was deservedly named man of the match.

“I am over the moon,” he told SABC. “I am full of joy and happiness; not for the penalties but for the team; we deserve it; we fought so hard to the end; keep fighting 120 plus minutes;  guys were cramping… it just shows the desire and the will we had to keep going; I am over the moon and I am glad we came out victorious. It’s not me but the team,” Williams says.
