DANS IN DIE DONKER se boodskap is veral relevant in vandag se tyd, waar so baie mense swaarkry.

“Ek en my man het ’n naby-vriend verloor in Desember 2019.

SINGER-SONGWRITER, SIMONÉ ROETS, TOUCHES HEARTS WITH DEBUT SINGLE

A passion project which started in Brisbane, Australia, has sparked the release of a single aimed at uplifting listeners thousands of kilometres away.

DANS IN DIE DONKER, by South African singer-songwriter Simoné Roets, is a track about not waiting for everything to be perfect before living life to the fullest.

The single, written by Simoné and Jattie de Beer of Artistry Productions, was inspired by the fact that while tough times and challenges are inevitable, we must learn to pay attention to ‘how’ we get through it, rather than asking ‘why’ it is happening to us. “Pain and beauty often walk hand in hand,” says Simoné. “Life is not simply one or the other. In fact, life can be messy and sometimes a little dark, but we can find joy and peace amid the chaos.”

DANS IN DIE DONKER’s message is particularly apt at the moment, with so many people experiencing suffering and hardship. “While the message is honest and raw, the single itself is uplifting, and easy to listen to,” explains Simoné. “It offers a unique sound and a fresh approach to Afrikaans music, which I believe will resonate with listeners.”

The music video for this incredible song will be released on 28 September 2021.

DANS IN DIE DONKER is the first track off Simoné’s upcoming Afrikaans album. “My husband and I lost a close friend in December 2019. Shortly thereafter Australia went into lockdown due to the pandemic, and I basically ran out of excuses not to write. I had time on my hands, and for the first time I felt like I truly had something to say. When inspiration struck, I started writing in Afrikaans. It was then, far from home, that I just realised again how exceptionally beautiful our language is.”

Simoné, who has been living abroad for four years, is currently in South Africa to record her debut album. “The idea of recording the album in person in South Africa took root towards the end of 2020, and thanks to circumstances working in our favour, and a few miracles, I am now able to do so.”

Simoné and producer Jattie have been working together for many years. “We have similar ideas about music and what we enjoy, which results in a fantastic synergy. We also encourage in the moment creativity, which means that time together in the studio is always exciting.”

The result of this relationship means that listeners can look forward to an Afrikaans album filled with songs that will touch, inspire, comfort, and even challenge them. Ultimately, Simoné hopes, that the album will offer an enjoyable listening experience, because for her creating music is not about achieving success, but about the privilege of making something from nothing and sharing it with others. “Sometimes we have to do what’s in our hearts without thinking about it too much or worrying what others might say. I think it is important to encourage people to follow their passion, and to remind them not to compare themselves to others.” That said, she would like to see her music career blossom as she continues to grow as a singer and songwriter.

Simoné grew up in Nelspruit and excelled at sport as a child. When she started studying law she also became immersed in a creative environment, which helped her discover another part of herself, which led to her buying her first guitar – and her passion for writing music.

She released an EP titled Take Over in 2016. She also collaborated on a project with other artists in 2018, during which she wrote My Dear and Create In Me. In addition, she is involved at the Hillsong City Campus in Brisbane.

People generally associate Simoné with her legal background and her love for adventure. “This sometimes affects my confidence as an artist,” she admits. “However, music offers a creative outlet, which gives me the freedom to express myself and to grow at my own pace.”

Boasting an authentic, honest, and inspiring style, the release of DANS IN DIE DONKER will undoubtedly secure Simoné’s spot in the Afrikaans market.

SIMONÉ ROETS

Simoné Roets is a South African singer-songwriter currently residing in Brisbane, Australia. She recently released her debut Afrikaans single and music video titled DANS IN DIE DONKER, which is the first track from her upcoming album scheduled for release later this year.

Simoné grew up in Nelspruit. As a child she excelled at sport and decided to study Law after school. During this time, she surrounded herself with creative individuals who helped her discover another part of herself. This led to her buying her first guitar and subsequently unlocked her passion for music and writing.

She released an EP titled Take Over in 2016 and collaborated on a project with other artists in 2018, during which she wrote My Dear and Create In Me. In addition, she is involved at the Hillsong City Campus in Brisbane.

Although a newcomer to the industry, the talented young artist is determined to grow her skills as a singer and songwriter and to reach her full musical potential.

Simoné has an honest and authentic style, and it is important to her to produce music she can relate to. As a result, she finds inspiration in her own experiences and those of the people around her. “For those wondering if I am writing about them, I probably am,” she says playfully.

There are a number of people who influence her music, ranging from Brandon Lake, Charlotte Lawrence and Amanda Lindsay Cook to Khalid, Kalley, and even Justin Bieber.

Simoné enjoys working with other Afrikaans artists and has great respect and admiration for Joshua Na Die Reën, who features on one of the songs (Ongerep) on her new album.

People generally associate Simoné with her legal background and her love for adventure – she enjoys physical challenges like obstacle races and other activities. She believes that this gives her the freedom to express herself and to grow at her own pace when it comes to music.

For her, creating music is not about achieving success, but about the privilege of making something from nothing and sharing it with others. We have to do what’s in our hands and on our hearts without thinking too much about it or how others will perceive it. Think less, do more. And most importantly, try not to compare yourself with others in the process.”

SIMONÉ ROETS’ NEW SINGLE, DANS IN DIE DONKER IS COMPLEMENTED BY

A POWERFUL MUSIC VIDEO

South African singer-songwriter Simoné Roets, has just released her debut Afrikaans single, DANS IN DIE DONKER and with the message that you don’t have to wait for everything to be perfect to live and love in abundance, she immediately caught the attention of music lovers across the country!

The message is very relevant in the difficult times we are living in, and the song was written with Jattie de Beer of Artistry Productions. Her sound is fresh and unique and now she is releasing a captivating music video to give life to this powerful song.

The video, which was shot at Kaapsehoop by the talented Adi van der Walt of FOA, was created to complement the song.

Simoné shares that the location was carefully considered because the song is about light and dark, and Kaapsehoop is the perfect embodiment of this contrast.

“I grew up in Nelspruit but has always loved Kaapsehoop. It is beautiful and mysterious at the same time. DANS IN DIE DONKER is about opposites or contrasts,” she shares. “I also got engaged there and the Martin guitar I am currently using was an engagement gift.”

On 8 June, 2019, a record number of riders and runners showed up to participate in the 3rd annual Zwel Challenge. This event was held to promote child protection week and to advocate for the orphan and vulnerable children that attend the Zwel Kids Club Monday – Friday. This year, there was a 15 & 30K mountain bike challenge along with a 5K run/walk. Hundreds of people came out to enjoy the day from all walks of life. It was great to see everyone come together to show we all have South Africa’s future on our hearts. There was music, face painting, the smell of chicken dust, and a general sense of community surrounding the event.

Sinani is the NPO that channels resources to the Zwel Kids Club and has helped facilitate the event since inception. Sinani is involved in 10 communities in the region and has 1100 orphan and vulnerable children they are currently caring for. Craig Rebro, Executive Director of Sinani, stated “The Zwel Kids Club is one of our model life centres. This is largely due to the daily leadership and commitment of Collen Mathebula and Gugu Mhaule. The Zwel Kids Club is not just a feeding scheme. They also provide healthy activities, such as cycling, to keep the kids busy and active. They have participated in a young entrepreneurs’ programme, chess club, soccer club, gum boots dancing, and have a group of children who excel at playing the marimba. All of these activities make the club attractive to young girls and boys who would not come and participate if it were just a typical drop-in centre. This has contributed to the long-term success of the club. I believe the influence and guidance the children receive has already made a positive impact on the Zwelisha community.”

The event has attracted local businesses which support and sponsor the event. Debonairs Pizza was responsible for all the waterpoints and supplied each Zwel kid with a lunchbox. GO Zone water was present and handed out free 5L bottles of water to the community as well as provided a purified water fill station for anyone with empty water jugs. Oshee and 32GI gave energy bars and hydration supplies and Mopani Pharmacy covered the set-up, marketing, free water bottles, & t-shirts. We were pleased to have Ms. Elsinah Mhlongo from the ORC and the Department of Social Development as well as Ms. S. Felicia Ntuli. Their sponsorship of sandwiches and cool drinks was greatly appreciated by all of the children.

Another notable guest was Tsietsi Lakajoe from the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. We are thankful for the t-shirts and heart to advocate in Zwelisha and throughout Mpumalanga province and beyond. We look forward to continuing our relationship for the good of this region and the future of South Africa. Sinani’s life centre model is one that has proven successful and with the potential financial resources and partnerships created through collaborative efforts and events like this, we are excited for the future. We have the hearts, the team and the “know how”, it is simply the funding aspect that holds us back from making broader, meaningful change in the communities we serve.
