Buffalo Gorge Hiking Trail, Middelburg, Mpumalanga
This is not just hiking through beautiful scenery.
Add the mammals, the diverse birdlife where over 80 species have been seen over one weekend alone – the White Fronted Bee-eater roosts in the donga and Black Eagles soar over the mountain – and the more than 80 species of indigenous trees, the forests and streams and you soon realise you are in for a satisfying outdoor experience.
Buffalo Gorge offers 6 different routes. These routes vary in distances, to cater for all fitness levels. They take you through grasslands, wetlands, bushveld, and riverine forests.
The White Trail covers a distance of 12 or 15 km and takes between 6 and 7 hours. You will move through the different eco-zones of the farm. Negotiate a dense indigenous forest, pass interesting rock formations, cross several streams to reach a savannah area. From there the trail follows the edge of the escarpment, dips into a deep donga (home of hundreds of Bee-eaters) and winds back to the base camp across some flats. On the way, you could see kudu, klipspringer, duiker, warthog, and baboon.
The Orange Trail is a 90-minute walk through the indigenous forest – very scenic!
The Blue Trail is easy and covers much of the indigenous trees. The route is alongside a stream in a forested kloof with two waterfalls. This trail joins the White Trail and takes around an hour. The Blue Trail combines several interests such as hiking, abseiling, horse riding and tree identification.
The Yellow trail is a 1-3 hour walk which takes you to the top of the plateau and back via one of three options.
