Doreen Clarke Nature Reserve, Hilton, Natal MidlandsThe 3ha Doreen Clark Nature Reserve is situated in the Mist belt region of the Natal Midlands, just north of Pietermaritzburg, in Hilton.

The greater part of the reserve consists of Mist belt forest and grasslands and is home to a number of bird species that attract visitors all year round. These include White-stared Robin, Narina Trogon, Olive Woodpecker, African Emerald Cuckoo and the Forest Canary, to name a few. The best time for viewing is early morning when the forest awakens and a hub of birding activity ensues.

The reserve is an ideal place to take youngsters and show them the world of butterflies and insects, and to enjoy the cool forest and little stream.

The reserve is open to the public and there is a picnic area (no ablution facilities available. Families can also enjoy a trail through the reserve that takes about 1 – 2 hours to complete. The trail is suitable for children and older folks.

From the N3, take the Hilton turn-off. Proceed through the village to the Crossways Hotel intersection – continue straight through the intersection along Dennis Shepstone road, past the Hilton Police station. Take the first left turning after the Cowan House School entrance and then take a right turn at the T-junction. Proceed for 1km and the reserve will be on the left.
