In March 2011, Africa Geographic carried an exposé of the devastating poaching crisis that is gripping South Africa’s rhino population.
In the intervening months, which have brought no respite to the beleaguered mammals and those trying to protect them, the author, investigative journalist and regular columnist Ian Michler, has uncovered information that is even more disturbing. (Read about it in the July issue of Africa Geographic – on sale now.)
With the shift in rhino-horn trade patterns over the past few years, Vietnam has emerged as the leading destination for the illicit trade. The Vietnamese use rhino horn in traditional medicine.
Africa Geographic has created a petition to be delivered to the Vietnamese embassy in a bid to get it to stop the illegal trade in rhino horn. The aim is to destroy the market for the horn and, with it, the incentive to poach.
Please sign our petition to the Vietnamese ambassador to South Africa demanding that the illegal trade in – and killing of – rhinos is stopped.
