‘Superheroes’ raise funds for sick boy
Over 70 superheroes will transform the annual Pick n Pay Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon in an effort to raise funds to allow two-year-old Chase Winshaw to undergo life-changing surgery in Germany.
More than 70 runners of all ages and backgrounds will be dressed as superheroes when they run the Knysna Forest Half-Marathon in order to give the toddler a new lease on life. Chase Winshaw suffers from Cerebral Palsy, affecting the parts of his brain that control fine motor skills.
The deVere Group South Africa, in conjunction with Sovereign Trustees (Cape Town), has been planning the Superheroes to Chase fundraising initiative for some months.
According to Laura Burton, organiser of the initiative, the project aims to raise funds and awareness for Cerebral Palsy. Burton explains that cutting edge stem cell surgery, available in Germany, has increased the quality of life of its recipients by up to 70%. “We organised the race in order to raise funds that will contribute towards getting Chase to Germany to have this surgery. If this initiative is a success, we hope to be able to help other children in the future,” she says.
According to Burton, word of the project has spread throughout the Western Cape and Eastern Cape. “We have been training for months for this. Each runner will be sponsored to do so and we look forward to handing over the funds that will allow Chase and his family to make the trip to Germany,”she says.
All the runners will be running in matching T-Shirts and red or blue capes to show their support for the cause.
