Sedgefield Mosaic Cycling Route
Sedgefield is well known for its myriad of mosaic sculptures, which can be found scattered throughout the little seaside town.
It has been dubbed by many as the Mosaic Capital of South Africa and every year several beautiful new pieces are added to the town’s collection: tortoises, guinea fowl, benches, hearts, a horse fence, a fish, a tree of life, a bus stop, a war memorial…the list goes on.
Sedgefield is also known for its idyllic scenery and unhurried way of life. In an effort to promote these two distinguishing aspects of the town, a cycling route is being planned by Eugene Roux in association with the Sedgefield Branch of Knysna & Partners. Eugene is a well-known cycling fundi and owner of Cycleworks Sedgefield. He lives and breathes cycling and feels strongly that a venture of this nature would be really good for Sedgefield. “The cycle route will be a great opportunity for people to really take in the beauty of the town”, says Eugene, “whilst viewing the many mosaic sculptures along the way.” Those that do not have their own bike, will be able to rent bikes from Cycleworx Sedgefield. He even has one tandem bike available for hire for those who are interested.
The planned route will include markers for some of the more prominent mosaic features. Eugene himself plans to sponsor a mosaic at a very picturesque vantage point on The Island. The plan is to have three different routes of varying distances and levels of difficulty, including a gentle 6km cycle around The Island; a route around The Island and skirting the estuary towards the river mouth, and a longer 17km route which will incorporate much of Sedgefield, along with a Township Tour.
