Human remains found in Knysna
A group of workers made a gruesome discovery in a plantation at Fairview near Karatara, Knysna when they came upon human remains on Friday, August 12, at about 09:50. An inquest docket was opened following the discovery.
The local Criminal Record Centre visited the scene to gather evidence which will assist in the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of this person. A post-mortem autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, August 16 to determine the cause of death. An examination will also be conducted to determine the age of the remains and the approximate date of death.
According to the Knysna SAPS the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition. The remains will be sent to the forensic laboratory in Cape Town for DNA analysis to assist with identification.
Investigation into this matter continues.
As the Knysna-Plett Herald was being prepared for print, information became available that the autopsy indicated that the remains were those of a male person.
The case is now being treated as a murder investigation, since it was revealed that the man’s hands had been tied at the time of his death. There were also other markings on his body suggesting foul play. He was wearing navy blue shorts and a vest.
