Exciting School Holiday Programme
The national school holidays are almost upon us and the Knysna Municipality has plans in place to assist parents in keeping their children entertained during this period.
The Knysna Municipality’s Youth Desk is hosting an exciting School Holiday Programme from December 6 until December 15. These programmes are run in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), South African National Parks (SANParks) and the South African Police Services (SAPS).
According to Mayoral Committee member: Community Services, Cllr Cathy Weidman the aim of this school holiday programme is for learners to partake in various educational and entertainment activities. “Our programme is designed to encourage children to participate in sport, recreation, art, environmental educational activities and entertainment, while learning valuable life lessons at the same time.”
The two week holiday programme starts on December 6 at the Hornlee Sport field. Activities on this day include; indigenous sport, jumping castle and face painting. The following day the focus will be on environmental educational and hiking in the Harkerville forest. Thereafter, on December 8 indoor sport development activities, face painting and jumping castle will take place in the Sinethemba Youth Centre. Week one of the programme will conclude at the Knysna Love Life Centre where children can participate in an art and recycling competition, various games and face painting.
Weidman commended the programme as being a unique and wonderful experience for children. “The variety of activities will ensure that there is something for each child to enjoy. Our children have different interests and likes. At times we often assume that they all like sport, which is not always the case. I am thoroughly impressed with the variety of this programme and believe that it will definitely offer the children a unique experience.”
Week two starts at Wilderniss on December 13. Here children can enjoy canoeing as well as marine and estuary education. The following day they will enjoy jumping castle, face painting, sport and SAPS dog unit show will entertain the children at Karatara Community Hall.
Activities for the last day of the programme, December 15 will take place at the Smutsville sport complex, Sedgefield. Children can enjoy the jumping castle, face painting, and a variety of sporting activities.
All the programmes will start at approximately 10h30 until 14h00 on the said days. The children will receive snacks, fruit and juice.
In conclusion Weidman expressed her gratitude to all stakeholders. “Thank you to the Youth Desk for putting together this great programme. I would also like to thank DCAS, SANParks and SAPS for their contribution. I am certain that the children will have lots of fun while learning at the same time.”
Parents and children are advised to keep an eye on the municipality’s notice boards and its social media platforms for further details. The Youth Advisors at the youth centre closest to you can be contacted for more information.
