Urgent!! Volunteers needed to take oiled birds from Plett to Cape St Francis
Volunteer driers are urgently needed to take oiled birds from Plettenberg Bay to Cape St Francis following the spilling of oil from the bulk carrier Kiani Satu that ran aground off Knysna last Friday, 8 August.
A SANCCOB response team has been deployed today and will be setting up up a stabilistion hub at Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre at Plett where oiled seabirds from the effected region will receive basic treatment.
”It is impossible to predict numbers of seabirds that will be affected,” a spolesman from SANCCOB says. “A request goes out to the community of St Francis to please assist with the transfer of oiled birds form the stabilisation hub to SANCCOB next to the lighthouse in Cape St Francis, when needed.
The Kiani Satu, a stricken bulk carrier, ran aground last week between Buffelsbay and Sedgefield in the Goukamma Marine Protected Area. Subsequently, oiled has leaked from the grounded vessel and all relevant authorities are on scene to manage the causality and deal with the impact on the environment.
SANCCOB has been appointed by the ship owner to support conservation authorities in the collection of oiled seabirds, and to undertake the stabilisation and rehabilitation of oiled seabirds as a result of the incident.
If able to assist or to report any oiled or injured seabirds, please contact Wilna Wilkinson (Eastern Cape Rehab Manager, SANCCOB) on 082 326 4143.
