Kouga Local Drug Action Committee introduced
THE Kouga Local Drug Action Committee (KLDAC) had their first induction workshop on the role of the structure in combatting substance abuse in the area.
The induction took place at the Humansdorp Council Chambers last week Wednesday and was led by the provincial Substance Abuse, Prevention and Rehabilitation section of the Department of Social Development, in conjunction with the Kouga Municipality.
KLDAC Chairperson Calvin Jaars says the committee needed the induction to ensure that members understood the broader concept and were guided by a framework in executing their tasks.
“It’s a monumental task that we have ahead of us, as substance abuse levels haven’t shown a significant decrease,” he said.
The session concentrated on three areas that the group needed to focus on to move forward, which are: Demand Reduction, Supply Reduction and Harm Reduction.
Jaars says the KLDAC will hold their strategic planning session on June 7.
“There we will focus on developing our own Mini Drug Master Plan, which is a localised version of the provincial and national plans.”
The committee will be embarking on campaigns targeting schools in the area in the near future.
