The Route:
Duration: 5 Hours long
Trail type: Slackpacking trail
Terrain: Moderate, sandy in places, some climbing involved.
Itinerary:
Hikers will arrive early in the morning at one of the much loved coffee shops in De Kelders – Coffee On The Rocks. The trail will commence at 09:00 sharp, this is be based on the tides at the time. The hike is roughly 5 hours long.
If the weather is bad a trip to the Stranveld Museum may be included in the trip.
*There is an option to overnight before and after the hike with dinner at the Buitesteen Pub & Grill as a yummy recommendation.
There will be 5 caves to visit along the way, so be prepared for a bit of climbing.
The first cave that you will visit is Drupkelders. This is the only fresh water cave along our coastline and the rest of the South African coastline. Surprisingly there is a strong flowing underwater river that provides the town with fresh water.
The second on the list is Gideon’s Cave. The cave is only accessible during low tide, one has to climb through a small opening upon which you are greeted by a large cavern.
Thirdly there is Duiwelsgat. The hole is 20 meters deep, the sheer cliff is nerve wrecking but deemed safe. For the adventurous, climb down and enter the cave from below.
Pillar cave will be your fourth stop. An interesting fact about the cave is that between 20 and 30 people can sleep comfortably in the cave.
Your last stop will be the Klipgat cave. This is the most well known of the 5 caves in the area. The scenic views of the Walker Bay area and Die Plaat is considered to be the best in S.A.
Once you have seen all there is to see strip down to your swimsuit and take a plunge in the refreshing waters of the cove.
Excellent whale watching!
