Things To Do In Greyton

Greyton is one of the Overberg’s most picturesque towns, found laying at the foot of the Sonderend Mountain range.

The streets are lined with thatched roof houses, oak lined streets and stunning mountain views. When visiting there are plenty of activities to partake in such as mountain biking, hiking, 4×4 and horse riding in Greyton.

The Most Stunning Town In The Cape…

GreytonThe town is best discovered by foot or bicycle. There are plenty of little shops and restaurants to explore. Make sure your bicycle has a basket attached or carry a rucksack as you are sure to find something that meets your fancy. Greyton Bicycle Hire can provide any aged individual with a bicycle along with recommendations on all the various bicycle routes in and around Greyton.

Mountain biking options in Greyton vary. There are a few farms in the area that are open to the public. GreytonBikes can be hired from High Hopes Bed and Breakfast, Rockhopper Adventures or the Post House. If you are looking to pedal along with your children the Rockhopper Forest is one of your best options. Over weekends you can join the locals for a 2 hour mountain bike ride. It is easy going and gives you a chance to explore the various trails in and around the area.

As Greyton is home to an incredible countryside it is no wonder there are many hiking trails in Greyton. The Platkloof trail is a short hike through the valley, this route is Hiking In Greytondefinitely for the bird watcher at heart. If you love birds also try the Knietjieshoogte walk. The hike is 3KM long and considerably easy. The Maermanskloof hiking trail is 5KM long and takes roughly 3 hours to complete. This is a good hike to do that forms part of the greater Bushmanskloof trail. If you are doing the Bushmanskloof trail stop by Oak Falls, pack a picnic and take a dip in the rock pools. The Hardepeerkloof hiking trail is a strenuous 5 KM hike. The hike is a beautiful hike that meanders through fynbos, across rivers, and past a waterfall. For those wanting to take their dogs along join Horse Ridingup on the Gifkloof trail. There is a picnic area alongside the riverbank, remember to pack a picnic. The lower Gobos walk also has a picnic site to be enjoyed!

The Diademe Equestrian Centre offers horse riding trails in Greyton for experienced riders and children. Breathe in the fresh air and surrounding beauty of the town all from horseback. Ride through valleys, mountains, and forests all with a highly qualified guide.

CuppacinoGlen Oaks 4×4 trail is a trail with a twist. You won’t be driving the course you will be contributing to a good cause. The farm on which the trail runs through is a working livestock farm. When you partake in the 4×4 course all proceeds go towards the removal of alien vegetation. Now you can have fun and do something good for the area. The route is only 8KM long but will take you between 3 and 7 hours with a 3 to 4 grading, so don’t expect it to be easy. The challenges are colour coded so that if you feel that they are above your experience you can avoid them. Do be aware however of the natural obstacles like Abbey Rosesand, stone, mud, and water.

After all, the outdoor activities head back into town and relish in the charm of Greyton. Indulge at Vanilla Cafe. They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between. Delicious picnic baskets can be ordered 24 hours in advance. Once you have your basket in hand, stroll through the town and find a nice spot to feast on the tasty treats inside. The Post House Restaurant serves country-inspired delicacies and booking is recommended. The Oak and Vigne Ladle Cooking SchoolCafe is the place to be to grab an early morning espresso and gourmet sandwich. Abbey Rose is a wonderful place to enjoy afternoon tea and a warm, freshly made scone.

For something truly unique book yourself a cooking class with the Ladle Cooking School in Greyton. The school is located in a large Victorian house. Quality ingredients are used and here you will specialise in the use of fresh products. Classes range from half day to over the weekend courses which are all designed for either beginners or experienced cooks.

Doll HouseMeander through the streets of Greyton and browse the various art galleries. The Catherine Paynter Studio is synonymous with her beautiful paintings of marine life and sweeping landscapes. David Kuijers Gallery is home to uniquely styled paintings showing various techniques, well worth a visit.

The Doll’s House displays many lifelike scenarios, filled with character. There are scenes of dolls dressed in beret’s painting portraits, doll’s going about their duties in a large Genadendaal Handweaverscountry kitchen and many more all displayed in neat little windows. The displays bring out the childlike nature in everybody, it certainly feels like you are peeking into a little, functioning world when visiting. The Dolls House can be found in the Searl’e Trading Post.

Arts and crafts lovers will be delighted with the Genadendal Handweavers wares launched by the Kraal Gallery. The vibrant coloured products are all made by locals. The Genadendal Handweavers was started as an initiative to help Lime Cordial at the Marketuplift the community. For an eclectic assortment of old and new items visit the Inside Story in Greyton. Items range from handmade soaps, salts, Indian textiles, furniture and more!

On a Saturday venture to the Greyton Morning Market. The operating hours are from 10:00 till 12:00 and located on the main road at the market square. Here you’ll find home made bakes and treats. From jams to koeksisters you will find it all. Stop by Von Geusau Chocolates. Richard von Geusau the owner and chocolatier crafts quality Belgian chocolates. The Trufflestruffles are heavenly and can be found in an assortment of flavours such as lime, pistachio and pear. Yummy!

Keep you eye on the events calendar, each year Greyton hosts the Greyton Rose Fair, this year it is on the 26 and 27 October 2013.
