The Southern Most Tip Of Africa

Struisbaai has the largest coastline in the Southern Hemisphere and nearby is Cape Aghulus, the southernmost tip of Africa.

The point is also where the Indian and Atlantic ocean meet. The beaches found at Struisbaai all have a tropical feel about them. The water is warm and crystal clear, always inviting. Other than the beaches there are still lots of things to do in Struisbaai and Cape Aghulus.

The Southern Most Tip Of Africa…

StruisbaaiThe town apparently got its name from three sources. “Straw Bay” because of the fishermen’s thatched cottages. “Struisvogel” meaning ostrich or after the old Dutch word “huge” with reference to the longest stretch of beach. The 24 KM stretch of uninterrupted coastline runs from Struisbaai to Arniston and is also called “Struisbaaiplaat”.

The beaches are the best in the region. Struisbaai beach makes for a wonderful beach to walk along and for Feeding the black raysswimming. The harbour side is always a hub of activity, the colourful fishing vessels are a common site. They deliver fresh fish to the locals and restaurants non stop throughout the day. The beach to the left of the harbour makes for a great spot to enjoy an ice cream bought from one of the ice cream vans parked in the harbour. The little bay, protected by the surrounding harbour wall makes for a lovely spot to swim at. The beach running to the right is ideal for surfers and fishermen. If you are brave enough you can feed the black manta rays that Struisbaai Harbourvisit the harbour with fish scraps purchased from one of the fishermen.

Suiderstrand Beach sports a number of rock pools, great for the kids to splash around in. The marine lagoon is perfect for a dip on hot summer days. Agulhas beach found near the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse is another beach great for swimming and surfing.

The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse is also nearby the point and was built in 1848. The monument is a heritage site that visitors can experience first hand by climbing the 71 steps to Cape Aghulus Lighthousethe top.
