Stanford is one of the regions best-kept secrets. Members of the town quietly go about their business over weekends while nearby towns fill to capacity. This little “dorpie” is ideal for a stopover on route to either Gansbaai or Cape Agulhas. Visit the Birkenhead Brewery, stroll through the Stanford Saturday morning market or go wine tasting at any one of the many wine farms in Stanford. Apart from the wine, there is a range of outdoor activities and things to do in Stanford!
Stanford is quiet, cosy and friendly. The perfect place to escape from the city and neighbouring larger towns.
The Stanford Saturday Morning Market in the courtyard along the main road is best to pick out home-baked goods. Fresh, delicious smells waft around the yard from 09:00, luring “weekenders” to stay for the day. For something different stay for the Stanford Evening Market. The market is held on the last Friday of every month from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Birkenhead Brewery.
Salmonsdam ravine trail is on the town’s doorstep and offers great hiking trails in the Overberg. There is a 3 KM trail that is perfect for the whole family. One has the chance to explore the caves along the way and discover a waterfall.
The nearby Mosaic Farm in Stanford allows you the chance to ride along on a quad bike and learn about the vegetation and wildlife as you go. During whale season guests have the chance to drive up over the dunes and spot Southern Right Whales frolicking in the bay. The farm also has various hiking trails and offers kayaking on the nearby Klein River Lagoon.

There are a few operators who provide boat cruises on the Klein River. Avid birders should bring binoculars as there are over 127 birds to spot.
Fly fishing in Stanford is a must! Vaalvlei Fly Fishing has two spring-fed dams that are stocked with beautiful bass, rainbow trout and tilapia.
For more land-based activities horse riding enthusiasts can saddle up and go horse riding in Stanford. Explore the beaches and mountain peaks from horseback.
During the summer months break away and walk along “Die Plaat”. There is 15 Km’s of unspoilt beach to enjoy. Walk, swim and collect seashells.

Wine and food lovers will be pleased. There are a wonderful collection of wine estates along the Stanford wine route. There is also a brewery for the beer lovers. Gourmands are in for a taste sensation! The restaurants in Stanford are all unique. Sample fine deli meats, rustic country cooking and well-crafted cheeses all a stone’s throw from one another.
