Ambassador for the Cape Whale Coast – Bobby Skinstad
Bob Skinstad was appointed the official Ambassador for the Cape Whale Coast, with the objective of leveraging his celebrity status and large network of social media followers to drive awareness of the region, its events and festivals and the large variety of activities and destinations it has to offer.
It’s been a little over a year since he has taken on his role as ambassador, so we asked the question “have you discovered all the Cape Whale Coast has to offer?”
Not even close, there’s just too much! Bob has a close affinity to the region (both his parents and his in-laws live in/near Hermanus) so he spends a lot of time with friends and family in the area, trying to discover new things he can share with his followers.
On Friday 10 April he was invited to his first shark cage dive with Marine Dynamics. He admits that, even though he is an ex-sportsmen, he was a little nervous! But, he thanx to the excellent team of people in charge, he felt very comfortable doing it, “It was amazing! I’d recommend it to anyone, and I would go back in a heartbeat.” He also added that he was very impressed with Marine Dynamics’s attitude towards the environment, conservation and education.
Comedian Marc Lottering and TV personality Dan Nicholl joined Bob on this trip.
After the shark cage dive, they went to Creation Wines, where we had a chance to have a quick chat to Bob Skinstad.
Bob says that tourism can be a little “pointed” sometimes. He is hoping to get the message across to people that there is so much more to see in South Africa, and the Cape Whale Coast specifically, than the “top 10″ things everybody seems to want to tick off their list. He believes travelling should be more about experiencing an area and creating memories, and less about ticking off items on an itinerary.
He sees himself as a new-age type of advocate, focusing more on sharing his experiences and recommending things to do and places to see, rather than just ‘getting coverage’.
