Cellar celebrates
Hermanuspietersfontein Wine Cellar is celebrating its fifth birthday and when counting back how many days ago the velar opened its doors, one comes up with a number very close to 1855 – the founding year of our town.
To mark the occasion they’re promising the popular Saturday Food & Wine Market of 10 September will be a day to remember. “Time flies when you’re having fun,” says co-owner and public relations manager Gerard Scholtz. And Hermanuspietersfontein’s followers will concur these guys aren’t taking themselves too seriously.
Proudly Afrikaans, the Hermanuspieterfonteiners are not to be mistaken for conservatiove and “slegs Afrikaans”, as they playfully and irreverently mix Afrikaans and English and enjoy a following form markets and cultures as far apart as Soweto and Stockholm.
But don’t be beguiled by their lightheartedness – they are serious about making good wine.
Winemaker Barto Eksteen was announced Diners Club 2010 Winemaker of the Year with Nr.5, his wooded Sauvignon Blanc – the ultimate recognition a winemaker wish for.
The Hermanuspietersfontein farm near Stanford was the first wine farm in the Walker Bay region to be awarded BWI Champion Conservation status. It is here where they grow the premium quality grapes for their wines, such as the Cabernet Franc for Swartskaap which has been awarded the SA Terrior Champion for 3 out of 4 vintages, making it the undisputed champion wine of this varietal in South Africa.
