Athletes will walk to Hermanus
A group of some of South Africa’s top action and adventure sports athletes will be walking from the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town to Hermanus in support of the I Am Water Trust, founded by free-diving legend Hanli Prinsloo.
The team, referred to as “Heroes”, will be departing from the Aquarium on Friday, 30 September and will follow the coastline to reach Hermanus by lunchtime on Sunday, 2 October.
The group consists of a medley of accomplished sportsmen and women who have so made contributions to the environment and their local communities. Group leader Ray Chaplin has already walked over 5000km within South Africa, including a 2 500km walk last year from Cape Point to Beit Bridge. He also supported a stroke survivor on their walk from Beit Bridge to Cape Point. A further mission of his will be the first human powered circumnavigation of the world, which will ambitiously include the north and south pole.
Other members of the group include Dane Grant, parkour/free-running hero, who is famous for jumping over and squeezing through any obstacle, Dewald de Jager, who is the national brand manager of the Heroes’ official sponsor, GoPro, and of course Hanli Prinsloo who is free-diving record holder and ocean conservationist.
Prinsloo is currently training in Egypt for the Free-diving World Championships to be held in Greece in late September, after which she will return to South Africa for the Whale Festival, with hopefully a medal or even a new record in hand.
