Councillor warns Helderberg to prepare for severe weather
Councillor Stuart Pringle has warned the Helderberg and surrounding residents to prepare for severe weather and rainfall this week.
The South African Weather Service has advised the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre that adverse cold and wet conditions will likely persist across the region until Thursday 4 June 2015.
The Helderberg and surrounding areas will be particularly affected in terms of high rain downpour. It is predicted that the heaviest downpour will occur for three-hour periods throughout the day.
Below are some forecasts for the areas involved, from Wednesday, 3 June 2015
• Cape Town Airport: from 11:00 until 23:00
• Hobie beach: Lourens River area: from 11:00 to 23:00
• Pringle Bay: Soet River and Sir Lowry’s Pass area: from 11:00 to 23:00
Cllr Pringle appeals to residents to also do their bit by implementing flood prevention measures in and around their homes. Clean the gutters and dig trenches if need be to allow water to run off. Sandbags, if required to prevent flooding, may be purchased from retailers such as Builders Warehouse or Build-It, at prices varying from R 17 to R 25/bag, excluding delivery costs.
The City of Cape Town has finalised its readiness plan for the 2015 winter season to mitigate against the risks posed by the inclement weather experienced between May and September. Click here to read more about the plan.
