Things to do for Mandela Day in the Helderberg 2014
What is Mandela Day?
Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.
It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”.
It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.
How you can do your bit in the Helderberg on 18 July 2014
1. Masikhule
This year Masikhule is challenging everyone in the Helderberg to spend 67 minutes knitting for Mandela Day.
Knit a scarf or squares for blankets and bring them to us on Friday 18th July at De Hoop Primary School’s Aftercare in Somerset West (turn off Old Stellenbosch Road into Merriman Ave and it is on your right).
If you haven’t done your 67 minutes by then, please join us and knit there, any time between 9am and 4pm.
Bring your needles and a friend or two and knit for 67 minutes with us.

2. Philwest Blanket collection for Somerset West Night Shelter
Join us in the lead up to Mandela Day as we gather blankets for the Somerset West Night Shelter. Our goal is to see how many blankets we can cram into an all-new Polo GP 1.2 TSI Trendline. We will hand-deliver the blankets to the shelter on 22 July 2014. Philwest Volkswagen is sponsoring forty blankets and would like to encourage all our valued clients and residents of the Helderberg Basin to help us fill up the Polo GP 1.2 TSI Trendline.
Please drop-off blankets at Philwest Volkswagen at 158 Main Road, Somerset West, between now and 21 July 2014.
Philwest Volkswagen cares for its community, together we can make a difference!
3. Beach Clean-up @ Gordon’s Bay & Strand Beach + Collection of clothes & goods for PATCH Helderderberg.
4. Donate Blood
This year, Mandela would be celebrating his 96th birthday on Friday 18th July if he was still with us. In memory of this great man, all South Africans are encouraged to give 67 minutes of their time to a good cause. Doing something that will help others. And what better way can there be than saving a life?
This year we are aiming for 96 donors in honour of Madiba’s 96th birthday. ……..We need to have approx. 150 people coming to our blood clinic. Some will not be able to give blood due to all low blood pressure, not enough food or other health reasons. This will possibly knock out a third of donors. But 96 is achievable – if we all help.
