Western Province Win 2014 Currie Cup
Capetonians have reason to celebrate, as Western Province have beaten the Golden Lions 19-16 in this evening’s Absa Currie Cup final.
The last time these two sides met in a Cup final was 1986, with the Cape side finishing triumphant. Captain Juan de Jongh emulated the class of ’86 by leading WP to victory in front of a packed stadium, who were treated to an epic battle for the coveted gold trophy. The Newlands faithful were rewarded with their second title in three seasons, and their first Currie Cup win on home soil since 2001.
Demetri Catrakilis slotted four penalties and set up a converted try for Jaco Taute, which was enough to secure the prize for the ‘Streeptruie’, and ensure that the opposition from Gauteng would go home empty-handed.
The Currie Cup is steeped in history and remains the most prestigious prize in South African domestic rugby.
