FRED LIEBENBERG IS PASSIONATE ABOUT HIS WORK
by Lynn Brown
Amongst the many interesting and talented people who live in Gordon’s Bay, Fred Liebenberg is a true craftsman who works with leather, rawhide and mild steel. His love of working with metal means that he is willing to tackle anything, “preferably something that is a bit of a challenge”. . .
Fred and his wife Tania and her three daughters, advocates of a green lifestyle, carry out their creative projects on a small holding here in Gordon’s Bay. During my afternoon visit, I was treated to freshly picked mint and honey tea along with cupcakes baked by the girls. The free ranging chickens tried their best to join the tea party, but with the entire garden at their disposal, were shooed back outside. Besides, they have their own ‘house’ next to the large vegetable garden, a chicken coop built by Fred and the rest of the family as well as a couple of school friends who were willingly roped into the project.

GORILLA TREKKING IN UGANDA
We have just returned from a wonderful three week birding trip in Uganda, which included a day of Gorilla trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
It was a strenuous expedition, but seeing these magnificent primates was an experience we shall never forget. . .
There are ten families of gorillas in the Ugandan forest. Trackers are sent out beforehand to establish their whereabouts on a particular day, and, on locating the family, visitors are allowed to watch them for ONE hour only.
Individual permits are issued for groups up to a maximum of eight visitors per group. The gorillas are people-habituated, a process that takes about two years, and the only form of aggression may be mock charges made by the young males.

LOCAL HERO—PAUL STEYN COMPLETES HIS 800KM WALK FROM PE TO CAPE TOWN
Earlier this year, we featured an article on 25 year old Paul Steyn, an amputee since the age of thirteen, who having suffered a number of adversities, nevertheless decided to look adversity in the eye and ‘Make a difference in the lives of other people in a similar situation to myself’ by undertaking sponsored walks in order to raise funds to help those in need.
At around midday on Friday 28th of September he walked into Gordon’s Bay en-route to completing his second sponsored walk, an impressive 800km walk from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. He left Port Elizabeth on Saturday 25th of August to complete his journey in Cape Town on Tuesday, 2nd October.
