Eco Fun Day 1 October @ Glencairn Navy Sports Grounds
The first upcoming Eco Fun Day is the ideal opportunity for all ages to learn in The Eco Fun Day aims to educate residents, families and environmental enthusiasts about becoming better custodians of their environment by participating in the fun-filled interactive programme. The programme includes live entertainment such as snake and dog shows, stories about our wildlife, and talks about how to recycle. Children’s entertainment will include, among others, a jumping castle, giant games and horse rides. The story of Lenny the leopard toad told in a ‘fuzzy-felt’ format will entertain children up to 10 years old. To top it off, delicious food will be on sale. More than 15 different organisations and various City of Cape Town departments will participate in the programme. Interactive exhibitions, such as the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa’s (WESSA) Eco House as well Two Oceans Aquarium’s mobile unit will keep visitors entertained while they learn. The public will also learn how to baboon-proof their homes and how to ‘Be Shark Smart’ with the Shark Spotters programme. Other exhibitors include various City of Cape Town departments, the Cape Town Environmental Education Trust (CTEET), the Endangered Wildlife Trust, Toadnuts and Human Wildlife Solutions. Various schools and eco-clubs will be attending the event and their food packages will be sponsored by the CTEET. ‘This Eco Fun Day event, which is a first for the City, shows that partnerships between government and organisations are key to educating our residents so that we can work together towards living more responsibly. ‘This programme may be an ideal seed for budding nature enthusiasts. Children and adults alike will have the opportunity to learn about our natural assets in a fun setting, which in turn may nurture a love for the environment. ‘The messages of conservation and smart living will be conveyed to the public in a fun and interactive manner so that they can get excited about their contribution to conserving and protecting the environment for generations to come,’ says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Environmental and Spatial Planning, Councillor Johan van der Merwe.
