Avontuur Premiere range brings in the medals 28 September 2015
AVONTUUR PREMIERE RANGE RED AND WHITE AWARDED
September has been a good month for Avontuur Estate winemaker Jan van Rooyen and his team with medals awarded for the Avontuur Luna de Miel Chardonnay 2014 and the Avontuur Baccarat 2011 (a Bordeaux-style red blend).
The Baccarat received a double gold medal at the 2015 Vitis Vinifera competition and a silver at the 2015 Michaelangelo Wine Awards. “This is a very good example of a Helderberg Bordeaux blend,” says Jan. “The dominant varietal is Merlot which gives it softness and a mellow feel, with a substantial amount of Cabernet Franc to add complexity and interest. The backbone is from 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, and overall it’s a really attractive wine.”
The Gold Medal awarded for the 2014 Luna de Miel Chardonnay by the judging panel of the 2015 Vitis Vinifera competition was a special moment for Jan. “The wine is an integral part of Avontuur’s DNA and was one of the first premiere range labels developed on the farm. It’s always been one of the flagship wines of the Estate, and to see it stepping back into the limelight, is wonderful,” he says.
The wines are available in selected stores in the Western Cape or from the tasting room at R200 for the Baccarat and R125 for the Luna de Miel. The Estate is open daily for tastings and visitors are welcome. Visit www.avontuurestate.co.za for more information.
