Bookings open for Mares & Foals Farm Walk at Avontuur
One of the best times of the year at Avontuur Estate is from August till December when the new foals are born and a few weeks later, are free to run around the paddocks in the care of their mothers.
Many visitors stop and watch or photograph the young ones as they arrive in the paddocks close up to the restaurant and tasting room, and are available for viewing by the public.
This year, as a special treat, the thoroughbred stud team will offer a once-off mares and foals farm tour where visitors can meet some of the mares and their offspring, our two stallions Var and Oratorio and enjoy a special wine pairing and light lunch afterwards on Wednesday, 26 August from 10h00 till 12h30.
On arrival the group will be met by owners Michael and Philip Taberer who will guide them via the paddocks and vineyards towards the stables where GM Pippa Mickleburgh will be ready to show off the stallions, brood mares and their progeny. She will answer any questions about race horse breeding.
After a leisurely walk back to the cellar building, guests can choose between a biltong and wine or nougat and wine pairing. The visit will end off with a light lunch. The cost is R250 pp.
A limited number of visitors can be accommodated for this once-off event, and bookings will only be confirmed once payment is received.
The walk to the stables is not strenuous and in total will be about an hour, but participants are advised to wear comfy clothing and shoes, and sun protection if necessary.
