Saturday afternoon (25 February) will see Georgians descending upon the sport field of Carpe Diem for Cansa’s Relay for Life.
The programme starts at 15:00 and will conclude at 07:00 on Sunday morning. This exciting overnight event is an opportunity for the community to join in the fight against cancer. There will be lots of fun, festivities and strengthening and creating friendships.
The Relay starts with the Survivors’ and Carers’ Lap, a testimony to the fact that so many people today are surviving cancer. Cancer survivors from the community walk the first lap around the oval to celebrate their victories while everyone else cheers them on.
The most inspirational time of the Relay is the Candlelight Ceremony which takes place at dusk when participants honour cancer survivors and remember those who have lost their battle with the disease.
There are similarities between Relay for Life and a cancer patient’s experience: It may get really hot during the day, you may feel like quitting, but you keep on walking. It may get really cold and windy at night – it might even rain. But you press on through the dark hours knowing that the sun will come up and it will be a new day.
There are 210 000 cancer survivors living in South Africa.
