Consider NMMU for a better U...
Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is an academic institution that constantly re-invents itself to remain at the forefront of education and training in the Eastern and Southern Cape.
NMMU’s George Campus at Saasveld focuses specifically on the environment, business and management – key issues in sustainable development. The campus is an example of a sustainable community, where we wish to show that the environment can be protected by living peacefully alongside wildlife, using solar power, making compost, recycling waste, catching rain water and saving water and electricity where possible. We also want to show that it is possible for students from different cultural backgrounds to live together in harmony, and that a university can be cost-effectively run and still maintain the highest academic standards.
Our Focus Areas
The programmes offered at George Campus in the School of Natural Resource Management (Science Faculty) and Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences aim to develop students’ insights, skills and practical know-how, which can help them make a real difference in the conservation, agriculture, forestry, wood technology, business, accounting and tourism fields. Education programmes are also offered at this campus
The relatively small campus ensures individual attention to student needs in a safe learning environment. Saasveld is a firm favourite as it is well-known for its close collaboration with the respective industries, entrepreneurial training; as well as its natural setting.
It is therefore an ideal choice for those interested in new ways of learning at the meeting place between the environment, business and management.
With its own nine-hole golf course, swimming pool, newly refurbished rugby stadium; football-, cricket and hockey fields, tennis courts, mountain bike trails, hiking trails and many other sport facilities all overlooking the Outeniqua Mountains, NMMU’s George Campus is a haven for any sport enthusiast. Our students are fortunate to have pristine beaches nearby, which offer splendid surfing, diving, sailing, fishing and whale watching opportunities.
On the cultural side, George Campus houses a number of societies which students can join and the campus also hosts a number of annual social events which add to student life on campus. The George Campus Choir is high in demand – both among students and in the community.
A new Student Recreation Centre serves as a convenient hub for students on campus.
Accommodation and other facilities
NMMU provides affordable, comfortable on-campus accommodation options. For that “home away from home” feel, students opting to live on campus stay in either one of three traditional residences or in one of the smaller houses situated across the campus. Prospective students are encouraged to apply sooner than later as on-campus accommodation is limited.
The Residence Manager is assisted by a House Committee of 10 students. The House Committee is further responsible for the social well-being of the residents. Some of the student highlights include various sport days, cultural competitions and the annual Mr and Miss NMMU George.
A fully equipped library, six computer laboratories, one of which is accessible 24-hours of the day and a writing centre are some of the facilities that assist students with the transition from high school to university.
The following undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the indicated fields are offered at NMMU’s George Campus:
