NMMU VC opens state of the art Fitness and Aquatics Centre at George Campus
“A healthy lifestyle is an important part of being a healthy and productive individual, and what better place to have a state of the art Fitness and Aquatics Centre than at the beautiful NMMU George Campus”. These were the words of NMMU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Derrick Swartz as he addressed members of the NMMU Management Committee, staff, students and members of the sport fraternity who were present at the official opening of the latest in a series of infrastructure investments at the NMMU George Campus.
The opening of the Fitness and Aquatics Centre on 9 April forms part of an aggressive strategy by the university to continuously enhance the NMMU George Campus along with the other five NMMU campuses in Port Elizabeth.
In his address, Prof Quinton Johnson, NMMU George Campus Principal, also emphasised the importance of the concept of wellness at the micro level (individual), which extends to wellness at a macro level (wellness with the world).
Dr Sibongile Muthwa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Institutional Support, congratulated all the role players, comprising of the various technical teams, service providers and also the George Campus management for championing this worthy cause. “Academic excellence is closely linked to physical exercise. While keeping the value of excellence in mind, it is important to create an environment which is conducive to ‘living and learning’. This concept is carried out across all six NMMU Campuses and this investment will ensure that the George Campus is taken to the next level”, she said.
Mr Johan Prinsloo, CEO of SWD rugby elaborated on the good relationship that exists between SARU and NMMU. He encouraged students to make full use of the facility and to “enjoy what the George Campus has to offer”. He concluded by thanking all role-players for providing students with a safe and well-equipped environment and for making a difference to the campus and the community at large.
