University Sport of SA Surfing Championship Victory Bay
The top surfing students from South African tertiary institutions will soon be heading to the iconic Victoria Bay at George in the Garden Route to compete in the annual University Sport of South Africa (USSA) Surfing Championships.
The event, sanctioned by Surfing South Africa, is hosted and organised by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) George Campus and will take place from 25 to 27 June.
The opening round heats are scheduled to take place on 25 and 26 June with the last round of heats and all-important finals on the Friday, 27 June.
According to the programme, round one is scheduled to take place on 25 June where the men and ladies will compete to secure their spot in the quarter finals; as well as round two known as the repo-charge round for men. 26 June has been set aside for the men’s third round, ladies’ second round; as well as the ladies’ quarter finals. On 27 June – the final day of the event – the participants will be surfing semi-finals; as well as the finals.
Winners will be announced after the final heats of the day have been surfed.
“An USSA tournament is a highlight on any institution’s calendar. It is an excellent opportunity to establish and foster relationships within the university fraternity, while at the same time contributing to the growth of sport, especially surfing in South Africa,” said Hugo Loubser, Sport Manager at NMMU George Campus.
The tertiary institutions that will take to the water in search of victory in this year’s USSA Surfing Championships are: NMMU (PE), NMMU (George), University of Cape Town, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Stellenbosch and Varsity College from Durban.
Students representing NMMU George Campus are, Ruben Lammers, Juan Reynierse, Kelly Olivier, Chris Elliot, Jaco van der Westhuizen, Ruan van der Westhuizen with Roxy Giles (last year’s winner of the individual ladies category) and Erin Slattery.
At the USSA Surfing Champs five trophies will be awarded in three categories, namely for the best individual performance in the men’s- and ladies’ category, best team performance for a men’s- and ladies’ team and the trophy for the best university where the men’s- and ladies’ scores are combined.
Hugo Loubser further expressed his sincere appreciation to the George Municipality for the use of Vic Bay and the Southern Cape Board Riders Association which has once again agreed to provide logistic support for the event.
