SWD cricketers take the Polar Bear Plunge for charity!
Hundreds of brave souls took part in the inaugural dotsure.co.za Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday, 6 August at Victoria Bay in George.
With an ocean temperature of 12 degrees according to the NSRI, this didn’t stop participants from freezing for a reason. The enthusiasm from the participants was obvious with many dressed up in weird and wonderful gear and chanting war cries!
Local organisations and sporting concerns were invited to attend this inaugural event in Vic Bay, and the SWD cricket team snapped up the opportunity to show their mettle. The team enthusiastically showed their support by donating blankets and taking the plunge in the icy waters.
“It was great fun for the SWD cricketers to be involved in the very first Polar Bear Plunge. We often get involved in Social Responsibility projects and this unique activity was well received by the participating players from our senior team and academy team. A small gesture by donating a blanket to the underprivileged was indeed a great honour for those involved and we will definitely be there next year”, says Albertus Kennedy – CEO South Western Districts Cricket.
Roxy Louw donned an orange bikini and took part in the plunge whilst Barry Hilton showed his mettle by completing the icy foot challenge.
Executive Mayor Elect, Melvin Naik, officially opened the event and expressed his gratitude to dotsure.co.za (a product of Oakhurst Insurance) for this great initiative and thanked the community for their support and blanket donations received.
“The dotsure.co.za Polar Bear plunge is all for a good cause, I’m thrilled with the support from our community and partners and would like to take this opportunity to thank all who contributed to making this possible. 488 blankets will be donated to those less fortunate in our community. Next year I would like to see us collecting 1000 blankets for those in need,” said David Roache of dotsure.co.za.
