Birdwatching at the Amalinda Nature Reserve, East London
This 134ha reserve was established in 1968 around the Amalinda reservoir and is managed by East Cape Nature.
This great expanse is home to Bushbuck, Eland, Zebra, Southern Reedbuck, Blesbok, Duiker, Cape Clawless Otter, Vervet Monkey and Mongoose. A commercial fish hatchery is also situated in the reserve. Visitors can walk selected routes in the area and spend time at the dam. Facilities are limited.
The reserve serves as an important birdwatching site all year round, offering a total of one hundred and seventy five species.
Specials include: Chorister Robin-Chat, Red-Capped Robin-Chat, Marsh Warbler, Olive and Orange Breasted Bush-Shrike and Malachite Kingfisher in the bushes below the dam. The old fish dams may produce African Jacana and White-Backed Duck.
During a visit of between 2 to 3 hours you can expect to see an average of 60 bird species.

To get there, head out from East London on the N2 towards King Williams Town. Just outside of East London take the off ramp to Amalinda Main Road and turn left.
Watch out for the reserve sign on the right just after passing the sports field then take the right turn.
Turn right onto the dirt road just before the McClelland School and follow the road to the end. Entry onto the actual reserve is by foot only.
