Take A Girl Child To Work Campaign
On the 29th May 2015 a group of 20 Grade 11 – 12 young learners from previously disadvantaged backgrounds in the surrounding East London area will be hosted by local organisations as part of the “Take a Girl Child to Work” campaign. This initiative was introduced in 2003 where learners are hosted at an organisation for a day in order to experience the corporate environment and what it has to offer.
Khoni Konsulting in partnership with Soul City “Rise Young Women’s Club” and Businesswomen’s Association East London have structured their first “Take a Girl Child to Work” campaign aimed at encouraging young women to inspire, influence and lead others to greatness. This event will commence with a business breakfast where the learners will be partnered up with companies in their relevant sectors of interest, treated to a lovely breakfast and goody bags. Thereafter, the learners will be allocated to the companies available and will spend the day at the workplace shadowing their sponsor. All the learners will receive a certificate of attendance for their support and companies are also able to mark this initiative off as part of their Corporate Social Investment.
The selection of the learners by Thoko Budaza from the Soul City Institute and the organisers was based on a specific profile of the learners. The learners had to be in Grade 11 – 12, their subjects must include Maths, Physical Science, Accounting and Business Economics with an average pass rate of between 50% – 60%. These learners had to also be based in previously disadvantaged areas around East London. “Rise Young Women’s Clubs Programme Is about connecting young women from disadvantaged communities to opportunities and to South Africa.”, says Ms Budaza.
The guest speaker for the day who will further inspire the girls will be Thulisile Nkonki, (28 years) who has recently qualified as a Chartered Accountant and works for one of the prestigious Accounting firms in South Africa. As a young lady in the workplace, Nkonki is passionate about making a difference within her industry.
The goal of the “Take a Girl Child to Work” Day initiative is to “deepen the thinking of the girl child with regard to their infinite roles in society, enhance her self-esteem, inspire and motivate her to reach her full potential”, says the organiser Gando Stenge.
The breakfast will be held at the Buffalo Park Hospitality at the Border Cricket Stadium. The cost for corporates to adopt a girl child for the day is R990.00. This cost includes attendance to the breakfast by the company representative, 1 girl child and goody bag. For further information on how companies can take part on this day, please contact Gando Stenge on 043 721 2462 or email gando@khonikonsulting.co.za
