Lots to see at Mpongo
Mpongo Private Game Reserve is the second place to be featured in the GO! and Express series of things to do during the December holidays.
The game reserve is conveniently close to East London and the airport, accessible by tarred road, and offers a unique blend of luxury accommodation and game viewing.
It is home to elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo, giraffe and many various antelope species. Mpongo is also a bird watchers’ paradise boasting hundreds of bird species, including ground hornbills and the endangered red-billed ox-pecker.
Sightings of a number of migrant birds can be enjoyed throughout the various seasons, including the Steppe buzzard all the way from Russia. Guests are able to see even big game from their lodge decks.
The Huberta restaurant provides guests with a blend of African and European cuisine, while gazing at hippos through large, open windows overlooking the waterhole.
Mpongo offers several services and facilities to ensure a truly remarkable and comfortable stay. These include a shuttle service, a swimming pool at River Lodge as well as a number of activities on the reserve, namely bass fishing, guided game drives, walking safaris and horseback safaris.
Guests are even welcome to bring along their mountain bikes, enabling them to come close to the fauna and flora in the heart of the reserve.
Game drives take place on an open vehicle under the guidance of an experienced game guide for two to three hours, or guests are welcome to try the self-drive game viewing option where they can view the game from the comfort of their own vehicle.
An educational centre is under development whereby all may soon enjoy further education on the reserve and all it conserves.
Businesses can also book their year-end function with them. They offer tailor- made packages to suit most budgets.
