Joy at Frere Hospital children’s ward
Port Rex Lions in conjunction with Hudson Park Primary shared the Christmas love at Frere Hospital’s children’s ward last Thursday evening.
Dressed in red and green, the Christmas elves handed out 145 fluffy toys to the children as well as 20 toiletry packs for teenagers. Diane Cierra, president of the Lions Club, said the Lions visit Frere on a bi-monthly basis, but she was delighted to have Hudson joining in this special Christmas visit.
Hudson Primary’s Outreach Club collected all the toys and goodies as part of a drive at the school, which they hope to continue in the future.
Marisa Volgenau, member of the Port Rex Lions, told of a touching experience where she handed a tube of toothpaste and a toothbrush to a young boy who turned to her and asked:
“Is this really mine? I don’t have to share it?” It is because of the great need that they give back.
Hudson Park Grade 6 pupil Zacharee Campbell said she found giving a fulfilling activity because most of the people they gave to were underprivileged and really appreciated what they gave. She joined the project thanks to her school’s outreach club.
