Grand Prix racing action
This year’s Pro Tour Motor Racing Road Show will visit South Africa’s fastest race track circuit this upcoming weekend for the sixth round of the series at the East London Grand Prix circuit.
A field of 16 of the finest GT cars in South Africa will head up the proceedings, which feature two races each for GT Challenge cars and Mr Shelf Porsche GT3 Club Challenge.
The pundits predict that the fastest of the GT3 cars will top 265km/h down East London’s long straight and through South Africa’s fastest race track complex of bends – the fearsome Potter’s Pass leading into Rifle Bend.
Facing this prospect as the man to beat will should be defending South African GT Challenge champion Andrew Culbert in his Bigfoot Express Freight Porsche 997 GT3 Cup and teammate Sun Moodley, also in his Bigfoot Express Porsche 997 GT3 Cup car.
- The Comsol Volkswagen Challenge regional championship should field about 25 cars in East London, featuring three classes on the day. The Class FSi class for cars powered by two-litre 16v FSi motors with wilder cams and throttle bodies should see Waldie Meintjes (Performance Masters Polo) start as the favourite.
- The Hankook Formula Vee category should bring 16 cars to the East London grid, with slip-streaming battles throughout the field very much a part of the show.
- The Red Star RSR Superbike Masters should lap the East London circuit at an average speed of more than over 170km/h, with velocities of more than over 270km/h the norm in the straight.
- The East London circuit gates will be open from 7am this Saturday, with racing scheduled to start at 10 am. The parking at the venue is both plentiful and free. Admission, however, will cost R50 and children under 12 years old enter for free. Everyone can visit the pits on foot, while food and drink will be on sale., or you can cater for yourself.
