AVBOB initiative
AVBOB funerals gave teachers and pupils at Sinovuyo High School in Duncan village a reason to smile after donating school uniforms to 30 pupils.
The youngsters received skirts, trousers, shirts and school shoes from the funeral giant.
AVBOB area Manager Siphokazi Konono said the donation forms part of their quarterly initiative of ploughing back into the community.
“We’ve been running this programme for the past few years. It’s also to create awareness that AVBOB can be a trusted service provider as our slogan says ‘We are here for You’,” Konono said.
Events coordinator at Izwi Lethemba Community Radio station Noloyiso Siqele said AVBOB works in partnership with the station to nominate the most deserving schools.
“Our task was to nominate the most needy school and Sinovuyo came to our attention. We then spoke to the principal to give us a list of the most deserving pupils,” she said.
School head of department Thazea Mnyaka said they are grateful for the donation as most of their pupils come from poor families. He said it was horrible to see pupils being laughed at because they do not have a uniform.
“As teachers it is not nice seeing a pupil come to school wearing a torn uniform and shoes with holes. One pupil came to school wearing a shoe sewn with a thin wire, his toes were showing and he was uncomfortable at school.”
One of the pupils who received a school skirt during the handover, Lutho Phongomile, said:
“I am very happy because I come from a disadvantaged background. Now I will be able to walk with pride and confidence wearing my new skirt when the schools re-open thanks to AVBOB,” Phongomile said.
AVBOB funerals will continue with this initiative in all its branches.
