Avalon Market @ Kidd’s Beach – the Gem of the Sunshine Coast
If you take the R72 south from the East London Airport, take a leisurely drive through rolling hills and lush (now that we have had a bit of rain), beautiful dairy farms you will soon come to the turnoff to the lovely hamlet of Kidd’s Beach.
If you continue just a short ways past the turnoff on the R72, you will come to one of our area’s hidden gems… hidden that is, if you are not ‘in the know’. For those who are however, Avalon Market situated on Hillcrest Farm, is the largest market in the greater Buffalo City area and is the perfect destination for a great family day out.
A meandering path through a forest of trees on the banks of a dam on an equestrian estate, this large but extremely charming market offers visitors and guests a wide range of beautifully crafted artisan products, live entertainment, pony rides for the kids and everything one could wish to eat or drink on a lazy Sunday morning, including craft beer and wine… yeah… why not!
This place is popular… very… and I can see why. As you cross the ‘hand built’ bridge into the woods, one cannot help feeling like you are entering Nottingham Forest and stepping back in time, only here, Robin Hood rides a Harley Davidson, not a steed, and Friar Tuck’s barrel is filled with craft beer – and the wine is served out of a bottle.
An entire little craft stall village has been built lovingly by hand with winding paths guiding you on a route through stalls selling hand-made clothing, jewellery and wine for her, toys and sweet things for the kids and hand forged knives & axes, home made salami, beautiful breads and craft beer for him. This market has something for everyone.
After working up a good appetite, the food stalls offer up a hearty Hillcrest breakfast (for him), Banting breakfast (for her) and a kiddies burger & chips for the little ones. Grab a table (if you are lucky enough to find one free) and enjoy your meal listening to the mellow songs being sung by the one-man street musician, perfectly in tune to the surroundings.
Make no mistake this place is popular. You will without a doubt bump into someone you know. You will have a wonderful day out with your family … and after having been here once, you will almost certainly return as it is, without a doubt the gem of the Sunshine Coast.
