Catching up with old & new friends at The Prawn Shack
Usually, day trips in and around Durban wouldn’t feature only one restaurant, but visiting The Prawn Shack is definitely a whole day affair. Now trust me, there’s going to be a bit of drinking involved, so best get a taxi to take you and all your friends. Hire a taxi for the day, the driver will patiently wait until you’re ready to head home.
You’ll find The Prawn Shack about 110km north of Durban, next to the Amatikulu Prawn Farm. It’s not very well sign posted, but the local tour operators know where to find it. At the end, you travel along a gravel road and then find your destination among the sand dunes. It is located on Tribal Trust land, keeping the views free of brick & mortar.
The Prawn Shack is a rustic venue, among the sand dunes and walking distance to the beach. The dress code is very casual, but really anything goes – this is a place to chill, unwind and have a bit of laughs with your friends…the more the merrier. If spending a day at this idyllic venue is just not enough, why not stay over? There are a number of accommodation options to choose from, some very basic and affordable, but others have the luxuries that you’re use to. This way you can really relax and you don’t have to worry about how to get home.
There is a set menu that lasts about 5 hours. It starts with Caprese Salad – tomato, mozzarella, olive oil, French bread and a variety of sauces. You will have Prawn Bisque, Prawn Bunny, Prawn Tails, Chilli Prawn Pasta and Grilled Prawns. Don’t leave before desert, it’s baked camembert topped with caramelized sugar and port sauce served with biscuits and seasonal fruit. But first things first, there’s a complementary Caipariniha waiting for you on arrival and you have to try the Prawn Tequila, it’s a bit of a tradition.
In between the courses, you just sit back, catch some sun, laugh with your friends and enjoy the view…
