Kloof & Highway SPCA
Where Hero's PAW Together
Welcome
The Kloof & Highway S.P.C.A. is situated in the mist belt of Kloof overlooking Pinetown on the property known as Glenholme. The communities we serve within our jurisdiction ranges from Westville to Cato Ridge and all areas in between.
The Kloof and Highway SPCA provides a shelter for strays, abandoned and unwanted animals. These animals have no voice to speak out against cruelty and neglect and it is our society’s aim to be the voice of the animals in need. The SPCA movement does not only deal with domestic animals, but also includes farm animals, wildlife and any of God’s creatures. Our Inspectorate is called upon to be anywhere ‘where man and animal interact.’ Our functions include basic animal care for the underprivileged, re-homing of animals, inspection and checks on abattoirs etc, outreach work, education and awareness of animal welfare.
The Kloof & Highway SPCA deals with, domestic animals, farm animals and wild animals!
The kennels, cattery and horse care unit of the Kloof and Highway SPCA provide a shelter for animals that have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Many strays and domestic pets that can no longer be kept by their owners are also admitted to the Kloof and Highway SPCA.
The pound, being the cattery and kennels are one of the most visible parts of the Society’s operations. The kennels act as adoption centers for unwanted, stray and injured animals and as holding facilities for animals waiting to be reunited with their owners or pending an investigation. Our cattery houses a section for kittens and then a section for adult cats.

KLOOF AND HIGHWAY SPCA
The first SPCA in South Africa was started approximately 125 years ago, and today there are 97 SPCAs throughout South Africa, ranging from very small in size to very large. Over the years, as the number of SPCAs grew, their management teams realised that a forum was needed to address common issues as well as ensure uniformity, the maintenance of high standards of welfare and quality service to the community.
The result? The Federation of SPCAs (now the National Council of SPCAs) was founded in 1955 and the SPCA movement subsequently negotiated to have its own self-governing Act of Parliament in the early nineties. This was promulgated and enacted as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, No. 169 of 1993.
The first SPCA in South Africa was started approximately 125 years ago!
THE BIRTH OF THE KLOOF AND HIGHWAY SPCA
In 1965 Skit Field died and left almost his entire estate valued at R1.5 million to theSPCA to “as soon as possible after my death establish a branch of the SPCA on the property in Glenholme”. He left a large tract of land with its own water supply and enough money to build a dream SPCA – however the reality of the dream was not an easy one to accomplish.
Initially there was a division of opinion on the opening of the SPCA in Kloof. People did not want rows of kennels housing “yapping” dogs in the exclusive and hitherto peaceful suburb of Kloof.
Animal lovers said the SPCA has a right to inherit, yet there were those who owned valuable adjacent properties who felt the SPCA could build their kennels elsewhere and insisted the municipality enforce the bylaws.
The SPCA was given notice to get off the property. The SPCA rejected this and this conflict continued for many years. Due to the legal deadlock money was trickling in and the SPCA was operating with totally inadequate facilities.
The Kloof Council sent out a referendum to ratepayers asking for their answer of “YES” or “NO” to the SPCA. The answer from the people of Kloof was a majority “YES” and so the Kloof and Highway SPCA began its journey on the worthy quest of animal welfare!

Our mission plain and simple is the prevention of cruelty to animals!
So what is the SPCA’s Mission?
Our Mission is exactly as our name indicates, the prevention of cruelty to animals, by way of education, law enforcement, and pro-active and reactive activities.
Extremely high standards have been developed during the past 22 years of community service, benefiting animal welfare. In almost every case, education compliments prevention, the alternative to cure and to promote self-help and upliftment. Kloof and Highway SPCA is here for the duration and has been growing since 1968 from small humble beginnings.
Your dedicated support enables us to continue with our work in Animal Welfare and to prevent cruelty to animals; care for the vulnerable; abandoned; injured and to promote the humane treatment of animals by education and by monitoring activities which involve animals.
Every living creature has intrinsic value and is a sentient being.
Statement of Belief
Our Statement of Principles and Beliefs is this:-
“Every living creature has intrinsic value and is a sentient being. Our primary and motivating concern is the prevention of cruelty to all living creatures. We are mindful that humans have been uniquely endowed with a sense or moral values. For this reason, we believe humans are responsible for the welfare of those animals that they have domesticated and those upon whose natural environment humans encroach. This responsibility, we believe, must be shared by all people”. In line with this statement the Kloof & Highway SPCA has launched the Humane Education Program.
Humane Education
Regular school tours are held at our society. The children are taken on a tour of our kennels, cattery and often also the horse care unit. We have children ranging in age from 3 years to 18 years and the tours are age appropriate. Educating young children to respect animals and treat them properly plays a vital role in the prevention of cruelty. Abuse of animals begins at a far earlier age than most realize and research shows that those who abuse animals often go on to abuse people.
Talks are also given at schools. The aim of our humane education is:
• Teach children to become aware of the basic needs of animals.
• Show them how to look after animals responsibly and kindly by providing food, water, shelter, freedom of movement (no chaining), affection
and basic health care.
• Encourage children to report cases of cruelty, injury, neglect or accident to the SPCA; and; most importantly
• TEACH COMPASSION TOWARDS ALL LIVING CREATURES.
We would like to thank the children and schools for their continued support of all our projects!
Should you wish to make a booking for your school, be interested in assisting with our educational programme or be willing to make a financial contribution please contact the Kloof & Highway SPCA (details on contact page) and ask for Janine Kyle.

Meet our Team
Barbara Patrick – Manager
Barbara Patrick has been Manager of our society since September 2008. Barbara’s love of animals is apparent to all who meet her. She has four ‘four legged’ children named Ella, Donna, Dolce and Gabanna. Barbara’s office is situated right at the front of our Reception block and she is a very ‘hands on’ Manager who is involved with the public and our animals on a daily basis. Barbara attends our outreach clinics and makes sure to do a ‘walkabout’ of our society every day. Barbara has made many positive changes at the Kloof and Highway SPCA.
Dr Govender – Vet
Dr Govender has just joined our society as our full time vet. His enthusiasm and warm personality make him a valuable asset to our clinic. Dr Govender attends to all our animals and his days are very busy. When he has a chance he likes to take some time to interact with children to educate them on the importance of caring for your animals

Introducing Our Patron
The Kloof and Highway SPCA is honoured to have Megan Coleman as our Patron.
Megan is an avid supporter of animal welfare. Megan became involved with our society two years ago when she ‘waited tables’ at a celebrity dinner in our aid. She has hosted ladies breakfasts and been involved in many fundraisers for our animals.
Megan adopted an 18 month old africanus dog in 2010 after touring our pound area. He had been rescued from a snare and Megan decided that she wanted to give him a loving home.
She has named him Jack and he is a special part of her family. Jack is a companion to Megan’s other dog, Chester, who was also adopted from the SPCA. Megan’s desire is to become a voice for shelter animals and to appeal to the community to support our endeavors.

Visit the kennels and view the dogs available. Discuss your choice with the Pound Supervisor, regarding the breed and behavioral background.
Some folk prefer to bring the family along, which is a good idea, to obtain some idea of the animal response, especially where children are concerned.
