Practitioners mark African Traditional Medicine Day in Queenstown
The Eastern Cape Health Department has again emphasised the need for collaborative efforts between medical practitioners and traditional healers.
More than 800 practitioners marked African Traditional Medicine Day in Queenstown on Sunday.
Traditional healers from all corners of the Eastern Cape were present.
The provincial health department hopes to strengthen ties between them and conventional medical practitioners.
General Secretary for Traditional Health Practitioners in South Africa, Solly Nduku says: “Traditional healers have come a long way. 20 years ago they were not recognised as medical practitioners but now they are.”
The challenge now is getting them fully adopted in medical schemes.
The department says they have to work together to ensure that traditional practitioners are recognised in the medical fraternity.
